Mix up your exercise with some volunteering
Written by admin on July 21, 2008 – 12:18 am -This weekend I participated in our Lions Club’s highway cleanup. We have a stretch of road about a mile long that we walk over every couple of months and clean of any trash we find.
It’s great to provide some community service. It’s also good exercise. Bending over, going up and down inclines in the median, carrying the bag of trash all exercise muscles that I don’t typically exercise. And at this point, any exercise I can get is a very good thing. I sure felt it afterwards.
For a lot of people this kind of work is part of an everyday routine, but for a desk jockey like me physical labor is something I have to go out of my way to do. One disadvantage of desk jobs is that they’re sedentary, so weight gain can creep up on you (as it did me) unless you take active steps to exercise and eat right.
Volunteering and sweating out in the sun for a couple of hours is one way to do that.

Hundred Pushups, Week 2, Day 1 I rested for two days in between Week 1 and Week 2, and did 41 pushups for tonight's workout. I'm in column 2 at the moment: 9, 8, 6, 4, max = 14. I've heard anecdotal evidence that even as early as the first day after starting a new exercise...... -
Back in the swing of things a bit I'd fallen off the wagon a bit with my hundred pushups workout so I dropped back to Week 3 tonight. (We were without air conditioning for a week, and doing much of anything physical was a chore.) At the suggestion of Fit36 I tried tightening up the rest periods between...... -
Working out with the Wii Fit On Memorial Day we went over to a good friend's house. There were a lot of kids there and eventually we congregated around the Nintendo Wii. They've had the Wii for a while but they had recently gotten the Wii Fit, which is a balance board and scale that is...... -
Extreme weight loss is possible, apparently Tough Money Love was kind enough to stop by with a comment on my last post to tell me that I was making things too hard on myself. He provided a lead to a guest post he did over at Lazy Man and Health. He lost 52 pounds in 136......

Burn Calories with the Lunge The lunge. I can't emphasize enough how amazing this simple exercise is. One of the most difficult workouts that I have ever done (barely at that) was 400 meters of lunges. Just body weight. For my leg size, that equates to about 400 lunges. It seems like a lot, no......

Skiing/Snowboarding as Exercise /caption]If you have ever visited a gym you may have noticed that there are exercise machines that will mimic many of the activities that people do because they love them. Fantastic idea! There are other things that are VERY good exercise and emotionally rewarding as well… walk the dogs at the local animal shelter, go to the local nursing home and volunteer to take on of the wheelchair bound residents for a walk around the grounds, rake leaves for seniors, volunteer as an assistant coach at the local school, be a soccer coach for the community, so many awesome ways to give back while getting in shape! Thanks for such a thought provoking post!
Many blessings,
